GAIA HOUSE
Why is UCM Proposing a new Interfaith & Living Center? You might say, "It goes with the territory." University Christian Ministries (UCM) has a 60-year tradition of serving the SIUC campus with programs that address the burning issues of the time. It is our mission to be at the edge of faith-based social justice activity--without regard to the kind of faith a person may have. All are invited to participate.

UCM's mission statement says it all. "We are a progressive Christian and Interfaith Center, a welcoming community committed to Spiritual Development, Peace, Justice and Ecological Sustainability." As a Christian ministry we are committed to protecting and restoring God's creation in all that we do.

How better to pursue that mission than to have a residence center where students live and learn the values needed for a peaceful and sustainable world? Campus ministries in this country have long sponsored residence facilities to provide optimal living-learning environments that enable the ministry to function in a self-sustaing way.

Building a center in the 21st Century means incorporating the ecological insights gained from science into the very structure and operations of the building. It is called "Sustainable Architecture." UCM's plan is to achieve the highest level possible of ecological integrity. This goal in the terms of the Green Building Council is to build a LEED Platinum building. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

In addition to various religious activities, the center would be open to multi-cultural learning and social events sponsored by University and community groups.   The UCM Board of Directors sees the new building supporting the highest ideals of the University in partnership with those students, faculty, and staff exploring the spiritual basis and practical know-how of ecological living and working styles.  We envision that such a facility would become a teaching tool for the campus, especially for those programs studying issues related to climate change.

LIVING AT GAIA HOUSE
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Life at Gaia House involves students in an environmentally sustainable living-learning community that is intentional, spiritually based, wholistically health oriented, globally multicultural, and fully supportive of academic and personal development.

OUR ARCHITECTS logo HOK
UCM has engaged the award-winning architectural firm HOK (Helmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum) to develop a conceptual plan for a new building on the existing site. HOK has literally written the book on sustainable architecture. The preliminary conceptual drawings included above are available for your personal review and comment at the Interfaith Center. Four students from the SIUC School of Architecture are working with UCM's building development committee to help ensure that the proposal fits well with the needs and preferences of today's student population.
